U.S. Airstrike in Yemen Reportedly Kills Mastermind of USS Cole Bombing”

Badawi, along with Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, Abu Ali al-Harithi and Fahd al-Quso, were named by the incoming George W. Bush administration as conspirators who organized the attack on behalf of al-Qaeda, which claimed responsibility.

The offensive maneuver was carried out in the Marib Governate, Yemen, and directed at Jamal al-Badawi, Capt. Bill Urban, U.S. Central Command spokesman, said in a statement.

The al Qaeda terrorist who masterminded the 2000 attack on the USS Cole that killed 17 sailors is believed to have been killed in a U.S. airstrike in Yemen, according to a report.

Al-Badawi was later convicted of plotting, preparing and helping carry out the attack on the USS Cole.

A defense official told VOA that the US was waiting for the results of a DNA test before formally declaring al-Badawi deceased.

A United States airstrike in Yemen on January 1 reportedly killed a notorious al-Qaeda operative. No collateral damage is now known.

The Cole was attacked by suicide bombers in a small vessel packed with explosives while in port in Aden, Yemen, for refueling.

Al-Badawi was charged with 50 counts of terrorism-related offenses, including murder of US nationals and murder of USA military personnel.

Al-Badawi is wanted by the USA government for his alleged part in the terrorist attack launched almost 20 years ago against the USS Cole. Other sources, however, said Al-Badawi was believed to have been killed. He was recaptured in March 2004 and sentenced to death, but almost two years later he managed to escape a second time.

Al-Badawi has been picked up by Yemeni authorities multiple times since the bombing; however, he has repeatedly managed to escape justice. However, he escaped from a Yemeni prison in April 2003, was recaptured in March 2004 and again escaped in February 2006.
