Australian Open 2019: Roger Federer speaks out about fifth set rule change

Australian Open 2019: Roger Federer speaks out about fifth set rule change”

Peter was Federer's coach when the Swiss was at the very beginning of his career, and he died tragically in South Africa during a safari in occasion of his honeymoon for a vehicle accident back in 2002.

When asked what Carter would have thought about Federer winning 20 major titles, the Swiss was overcome with emotion. I was able to have coaching lessons with him.

"I think if we are healthy and playing well, the four guys still have probably the best chance to always win Slams", said Djokovic.

"So, it was somewhat of a wake-up call for me when he passed away, and I really started to train hard".

Federer added: "So Peter was a really important person in my life and if I can say thank you today for my technique, it's to Peter".

Learning of Carter's death whilst playing at the 2002 Canadian Masters in Toronto, Federer was reputedly said to be "never so upset in his life".

Carter, who helped shaped the young Federer into arguably the greatest player in tennis history, was on his honeymoon when the fatal tragedy occurred.

Federer told CNN it was a career-changing moment.

And the Australian tennis calendar, the country's athletes, and the sporting culture as a whole continue to leave an indelible mark in Federer's character.

"They used to call each other and say "I have this really special kid I'm training" and Darren would say the same [about Hewitt] from Adelaide".

"When it first happened, I believe it was in the Davis Cup in Basel when I played an unbelievable weekend against the Americans (in 2001) and of course when I won Wimbledon, the emotions were so, so strong".

'He didn't want me to be a wasted talent.

"I think what I would like to say is that I've been incredibly fortunate to having had the right people at the right time. Sure you could argue I made those decisions, but I had luck along the way".

But among thousands of rowdy Federer supporters, two will stand out - Carter's parents Bob and Diana, who Roger flies to Melbourne from Adelaide each year to watch him compete in their son's memory.

Federer will look to win a third consecutive Australian Open at Melbourne Park at the end of January.

"Am I confident? I don't know".

Murray's hip surgery meant he played just six events in 2018, and Nadal's truncated 2018 campaign was bookended by injuries that forced to him to retire in both the Australian and US Opens. "The legends that I admire, the coaches that I've had in Tony Roche and Peter Carter-they've been incredibly inspirational and important to me in my life".
