Hyundai Elevate auto can walk "in mammalian and reptilian style"

Hyundai Elevate auto can walk

Hyundai has unveiled Elevate, a concept vehicle blending electric auto technology and multi-terrain robotics. "This technology goes well beyond emergency situations - people living with disabilities worldwide that don't have access to an ADA ramp could hail an autonomous Hyundai Elevate that could walk up to their front door, level itself, and allow their wheelchair to roll right in - the possibilities are limitless", continued Suh. Elevate is an electric vehicle with robotic legs, which can be used both to drive and to walk. At CES 2019, the UMV - for Ultimate Mobility Vehicle - saw its official debut.

Legs can also be folded away, allowing the vehicle to drive like any other auto on the road.

But bring on the impossible terrain and those robotic legs with five degrees of freedom come into play, making it capable of both mammalian and reptilian walking gaits, allowing it to move in any direction, with the wheels also rolling when necessary.

This, as the automaker points out, makes the concept well suited to first responders in emergency situations. Elevate is designed with four mechanical legs with wheels for feet and can roll along on extended legs or retract them to be driven like a auto. This allows the Elevate to drive at highway speeds just like any other vehicle. John Suh, VP of Hyundai Cradle, said Elevate is capable of climbing a 5-foot vertical wall or over a 5-foot gap while keeping its passengers level. Hyundai also said in the release that this concept might be used included being able to carefully extract injured people from disaster zones or rugged terrain.

And it's not just disaster zones, the vehicle makers hope to also help people living with disabilities that don't have access to ramps, they could use the auto as a taxi that could walk up to their front door, level itself, and allow their wheelchair to roll right in.

"By combining the power of robotics with Hyundai's latest EV technology, Elevate has the ability to take people where no vehicle has been before, and redefine our perception of vehicular freedom", said David Byron, design manager at Sundberg-Ferar. "What if a auto designed with robotics could save lives in disasters", said Hyundai's Innovation Head, John Suh.
