Suspicious packages sent to Indian, British, German and Swiss embassies in Australia”

The NZ consulate was one of at least seven global consulates evacuated after multiple suspicious packages were found, in what officials labelled a "hazardous material" event.

Australian Federal Police said the packages were being "examined" by emergency services and the circumstances around the incidents are under investigation.

It is unclear what embassies in Canberra were affected.

Victoria police issued a statement saying it was aware of "a number of consulate offices in Melbourne today receiving suspicious packages".

The British consulate in Melbourne was among those targeted.

Manuela Erb, the honorary consul of the Consulate of Switzerland in Melbourne, told the ABC that they had received a suspicious package at their Ashwood address.

The Indian consulate and United States embassy, both located on St Kilda Road in Melbourne, are believed to be have been affected, as well as the Swiss, British, German, Spanish, Korean and New Zealand consulates and embassies.

Two fire trucks, a hazardous materials vehicle and police cars attended the Consulate-General of India on St Kilda Road where staff were evacuated, telling reporters they had been told not to comment to reporters.

"All our staff are safe and accounted for", said a British High Commission spokesperson.

The Emergency Management Victoria website showed firefighters were responding to reports of hazardous materials at the British consulate general in Collins Street and at several locations on St Kilda Road, in the vicinity of the US, Turkish, Italian and Korean consulates.

"We handled the package according to our standard procedures and in close coordination with local authorities. who are investigating the incident", a spokesman for the U.S. Consulate told Reuters.

The packages are reported to have been marked as containing asbestos.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade confirmed shortly before 3pm that it was assisting Australian Federal Police at embassies across Melbourne.

The alerts come after Sydney's Argentinian consulate was partially evacuated on Monday after reports of a suspicious substance.
