Trump, California spar over money for wildfire relief funds

Trump, California spar over money for wildfire relief funds”

"Billions of dollars are sent to the State of California for Forest fires that, with proper Forest Management, would never happen".

The tweet states that the president has ordered FEMA to stop sending money "unless they get their act together", which the president calls "unlikely". "It is a disgraceful situation in lives & money!" the president said, referring to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

He later deleted the tweet and reposted it, spelling "forest" correctly the second time.

McCarthy has not yet responded to Mr. Trump's tweet.

At that time, he also threatened to cut federal aid to the state. "No matter how many people with rakes they deploy, forests are going to burn because of longer, hotter summers due to climate chaos". The order directs the Interior Department and the Department of Agriculture to identify ways to reduce "regulatory barriers" to better manage forests and get rid of hazardous fuels, and it calls for "treating" 4.25 million federal acres - an area larger than CT - to cut fuel loads.

Last April, Trump falsely stated that the California government is diverting river water into the Pacific Ocean that could be used to fight forest fires, but he also signaled he will fast-track federal help. Perhaps he simply means he won't issue any more disaster declarations for California wildfires, which is easy to say now but a bit of a reach when people are dying and homes are burning.

The freakish proclamation furthers the administration's attempt to pin the devastation on environmentalists while ignoring the clear impact climate change is having on extreme fires out west.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency falls under the auspices of the Department of Homeland Security, which has been left unfunded by the ongoing partial government shutdown.

Trump visited California in February and toured the destruction left by the Camp Fire in Butte County. "Attacking victims is yet another low for this president".

State officials have pointed to a variety of factors including some of the hottest years on record amid global warming trends.

Insurance claims from the recent spate of California wildfires have topped $9 billion and are expected to grow, the state insurance commissioner reported last month. "The president's irrational climate denial will mean we need far more disaster relief, not less".
