Trump Reportedly Trying to End Shutdown Without Looking Weak

Trump Reportedly Trying to End Shutdown Without Looking Weak”

In the past, Trump's talks to the nation have been carefully scrutinized for false information.

(According to the Toronto Star, the US president had made almost 4,000 false claims as of December 5 for an average of 5.8 per day.) Recently, the White House has been trying to justify funding a wall on the notion that there is a new crisis at the southern border, when in fact the number of people trying to cross the border has been in decline for nearly two decades.

Fighting for advantage in the government shutdown battle, U.S. President Donald Trump aimed to use a prime-time address Tuesday to convince Americans he needs billions of dollars from Congress for his long-promised border wall to resolve security and humanitarian problems he contends have reached a crisis pitch. It invited representatives from cable news outlets to a White House lunch with Trump ahead of the address, a gesture that is typically reserved for the lead-up to State of the Union speeches.

Mr Trump is scheduled to visit the southwest border on Thursday and it was not clear whether he still might choose to make the national emergency declaration.

Migrants break through the US border fence just beyond the east pedestrian entrance of the San Ysidro crossing in Tijuana, Mexico, on November 25, 2018.

Trump's address came 18 days into a partial government shutdown precipitated by his demand for wall construction, which he has said is needed to keep out illegal immigrants and drugs.

"The passion you hear from President Trump, his determination to take this case to the American people, as he will tonight in his national broadcast from the Oval Office, comes from this president's deep desire to do his job to protect the American people", Vice President Mike Pence said on Tuesday morning during an appearance on ABC, reported the Associated Press. He's asked Congress for $5.6 billion.

Trump repeated his call for a wall on the border, calling it "absolutely critical to border security".

However, in his address, Trump appeared to be willing instead to continue seeking a solution to the impasse with Congress.

"Now that the television networks have made a decision to air the President's address, which if his past statements are any indication will be full of malice and misinformation, Democrats must immediately be given equal airtime", they demanded in a joint statement on Monday night.

"If his past statements are an indication, (the speech) will be full of malice and misinformation", House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the senior Democrat in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, said in a statement.

Rehashing most of his recent comments regarding the need for border security, Mr Trump likened the steel barrier to residential fences.

According to NBC, at least CBS, NBC, and CNN will air the Democratic response to Trump's speech.

Mr Trump tweeted today that the group discussed details of "border security" and had a "productive meeting".

Democrats have repeatedly slammed the proposed wall but have remained vague about counter-proposals that would curb illegal immigration.

Mr Trump rattled off a number of grisly murders by illegal immigrants to justify the funding.
