Australia: Man arrested over suspicious parcels sent to embassies

Australia: Man arrested over suspicious parcels sent to embassies”

Australian police claimed that the man was arrested at his home in rural Victoria state late Wednesday, hours after several consulates - including Pakistani mission - in Melbourne received the suspicious packages.

Australian federal police said in a statement that "the circumstances surrounding these incidents are being investigated".

He was charged with sending unsafe articles to be carried by postal service and faces a maximum of 10 years in prison if he is found guilty.

The 48-year-old Shepparton man appeared in court today.

The substance in the packages is "suspected to have been sourced from his Shepparton home" in Northern Victoria, police said.

A Victorian man has been arrested and charged after suspicious packages were sent to consulates across Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra.

Avan made no application for bail and was remanded to reappear at court on March 4.

There has been no evidence yet that the packages were unsafe, but police Thursday said forensic testing was continuing to determine their exact contents.

The Indian and U.S. consulates on St Kilda Road, along with the British, Swiss, German Korean, Greek, Italian, Pakistani and Egyptian missions were targeted.

"Police have identified all intended recipients and have put processes in place to recover the outstanding packages", the AFP said in a statement. They said there was no "ongoing threat to the general public" from the remaining nine.

Local media on Monday reported that the Argentine consulate in Sydney had received a package containing white powder.

"After learning of incidents at three offices in Sydney and Canberra, DFAT sent a note to all diplomatic missions in Canberra on 8 January alerting them to the possibility of suspicious packages being delivered by mail", a spokesperson said.

More than a dozen foreign missions received suspicious packages on Wednesday, including the consulates of the United States and the United Kingdom in Melbourne, Australia's second-biggest city.

It subsequently sent similar advice to missions elsewhere. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
