British MPs demand Theresa May supply an alternative Brexit deal

British MPs demand Theresa May supply an alternative Brexit deal”

Theresa May has been forced to present MPs with a new Brexit plan within three days if her current one is voted down next week, in a move meant to lessen the chance of Britain exiting the European Union without a deal.

In a sign of the anger and division Brexit has sown among politicians, the motion prompted bad-tempered scenes in Parliament, as Conservatives accused Speaker John Bercow of contravening parliamentary convention by allowing a vote on the amendment.

By 308 to 297 votes MPs demanded that the government produces its alternative plans within three working days if her deal is voted down on 15 January.

But her spokesman added: "If that were not to take place. we would respond quickly and provide certainty on the way forward".

"I think he stepped way over the mark out today he's broken with parliamentary precedent".

After a two week Christmas recess, United Kingdom parliamentarians resumed hostilities on Brexit, with 20 Conservative MPs joining forces with the opposition Labour party and supporting an amendment to the May government's Finance Bill demanding that a "no deal" Brexit be ruled out.

With the likelihood of a disruptive "no-deal" Brexit rising, the European Union is looking at how Brexit might be postponed, and pro-EU campaigners are testing ways Britain could hold another referendum after voters narrowly backed leaving in 2016.

Earlier on Wednesday, May called on parliament to back her deal.

The 303 to 296 defeat means that the government needs explicit parliamentary approval to leave the European Union without a deal before it can use certain powers relating to taxation law.

However, that could be less likely with the government's defeat on Tuesday.

The opposition Labour Party has said it would immediately table a vote of no confidence in the government if May loses the vote.

"I'm sorry but there is a distinction between a motion and an amendment", declared Mr Bercow, at which Mr Francois yelled "ridiculous" and "utter sophistry".

And MPs could then hold non-binding votes on what should happen next.

"The threat of a no deal Brexit has [been] cynically used by the government for many months as part of their campaign to bully and intimidate Parliament into voting for a bad deal that would leave us worse off and offers less control", Murray said in a statement on the People's Vote website, adding that Tuesday's events demonstrated that Parliament "can still act decisively".

Meanwhile, Business Secretary Greg Clark told the House of Commons that a no-deal Brexit "should not be contemplated".

In the Commons, Tory anger was directed at the Speaker, who many MPs have long suspected is unduly sympathetic to the Remain cause.

The Leader of the House Andrea Leadsom said there were "some concerns" about his decision and asked him to confirm it was taken with "full advice" from the Commons clerk Sir David Natzler.

Agata Gostynska-Jakubowska, a senior research fellow at the Centre for European Reform, said Wednesday's parliamentary vote would do little to change the mood in Brussels regarding Brexit.

The government needs 318 votes to get a deal through the 650-seat House of Commons, as seven members of Irish nationalist party Sinn Fein do not sit, four Speakers and deputy Speakers do not vote, and the four tellers are not counted.
