Clark County close to active flu season”

Meanwhile, 19 states and New York City were reporting high levels of influenza-like illness activity, meaning a much higher-than-average proportion of doctor's visits could be attributed to the flu.

Experts said that this year's flu vaccination is a good match to the strains in circulation and it is not too late to get vaccinated.now most cases involve influenza A, last year it was influenza B that was heavily dominant. The death toll is lower, too, having reached a total of 91 at this point last season.

"So, just because one strain of flu is circulating in the community doesn't mean that another strain of flu won't circulate later in the flu season", Dr. Walshak says. H3N2, the strain largely responsible for last year's outbreak, has so far been less common than the H1N1 strain. Rates, however, were higher among young children and the elderly (14.5 and 11.9 hospitalizations per 100,000 people, respectively), as these populations are more susceptible to complications of the flu.

A New Jersey child has died of the flu, marking the first pediatric flu death of the 2018-2019 season in the state.

The flu is a contagious respiratory disease caused by influenza viruses and can cause mild to severe symptoms.

Health officials are urging residents to get a flu vaccine, as it is the best way to protect yourself against the potentially unsafe virus. While the CDC recommends that people get vaccinated against the flu by the end of October, getting a flu shot later can still be beneficial. "This year's vaccine is a good match for circulating strains and it is not too late to get the vaccine", he said.

Many medical clinics and pharmacies offer flu shots. The more people who are vaccinated, the less likely the virus is to spread - protecting those who are most vulnerable, including babies, older adults, and people with compromised immune systems.

Officials did not release the child's age, gender and hometown.
