IBM Unveils The Very First Commercial Quantum Computer”

The new machine doesn't look like a mainframe computer.

To design the IBM Q System One, IBM worked closely with design studios Map Project Office and Universal Design Studio, as well Goppion, the company that has built the display cases that house the U.K.'s crown jewels and the Mona Lisa, for instance.

ExxonMobil and IBM have signed a partnership agreement to advance the potential use of quantum computing in developing next-generation energy and manufacturing technologies, Kallanish Energy reports. Namely, that it now has a "quantum computing system" ready for commercial use.

The 2019 Consumer Electronics Show is now ongoing in Las Vegas, and USA tech giant IBM has just unveiled its latest creation with the first ever quantum computer designed for commercial use, the IBM Q System One. The machine has been designed by a group of industrial designers, architects, and manufacturers alongside IBM Research scientists and system engineers.

The system was developed alongside the Map Project Office, a United Kingdom industrial and interior design studio and Universal Design Studio and it rests in an air-tight environment that is enclosed by thick borosilicate glass.

For many years, quantum computers have only been within the confines of the research lab.

The quantum computing system has also been designed like a single package which is a first, with all the parts needed to keep this machine going. IBM has, therefore, consolidated all the components of the Q System One into a glass-enclosed, air-tight environment.

"Today's quantum computers include thousands of parts that work together to harness qubits to perform quantum computations". In order to acquire the system, the interested businesses would have to collaborate with IBM on a case to case basis. There is also a series of independent aluminium and steel frames to help avoid any potential vibration interference that could result in "phase jitter" and qubit decoherence. Microsoft is working on creating hybrid quantum computers, which combine the new technology with more conventional processors. All these are likely to be the areas where the IBM Q System One will be sufficient enough. The company intends to open a commercial center for quantum computing clients this year in Poughkeepsie, New York.

The IBM Q Network provides its organizations with quantum expertise and resources, quantum software and developer tools, as well as cloud-based access to IBM's most advanced and scalable commercial universal quantum computing systems available.

IBM has a legacy of bringing enterprise-focused computing solutions. Having said that, it is still very early to predict the success of the IBM Q System One.
