Jaguar Land Rover cutting 4,500 jobs

Jaguar Land Rover cutting 4,500 jobs”

The layoffs, representing roughly 10% the company's workforce, come on top of the 1,500 people who left in 2018, the company said Thursday in a statement.

Some of the money saved will be reinvested in the automaker's electrification drive.

JLR's figures were also dented by the introduction of European emissions standards known as WLTP, which resulted in a fall in demand for diesel cars.

The company, which employs almost 40,000 people in Britain and has been boosting its workforce at new plants in China and Slovakia in recent years, declined to comment when contacted by Reuters on Thursday.

"Unite will continue to press the auto maker for assurances over the jobs and skills of our members who have worked tirelessly over the past decade to make the company the global success story it is today".

The firm reported a £90m pre-tax loss in the three months to 30 September, compared with a £385m profit in the same period in 2017.

JLR, based in central England, will cut some 4,500 out of 42,500 jobs, targeting managerial roles rather than production-line workers as it battles to return to profitability. But sales in China have fallen almost 50% in recent months as cautious Chinese consumers have been holding back on big ticket purchases amid global trade tensions. "We have great belief in the potential of JLR's distinctive premium products and brands as well as in JLR's design and engineering capabilities", Tata Motors Chairman, N. Chandrasekaran said in late December.

He said: "We will invest in the vehicles, services, segments and markets that best support a long-term sustainably profitable business, creating value for all our stakeholders and delivering emotive vehicles to our customers".

Ford said it will seek to exit the family vans or MPV segment, review its operations in Russian Federation, and combine the headquarters of Ford U.K. and Ford Credit to a site in Dunton, Essex to achieve a 6 per cent operating margin in Europe.

A Ford spokesman said the vehicle maker now assumes that any Brexit deal would keep tariff-free trade between Britain and Europe.

"This is not about making the business today more efficient but completely redesigning it", Ford's European president, Steve Armstrong, told the Financial Times.

Unite national officer Des Quinn said: "Ford's workforce in the United Kingdom is world class in making and developing engines and gearboxes that are shipped all over the globe".

Marketers, alongside managers and administrators, working for Jaguar Land Rover are expected to bear the brunt of a mass layoff at the vehicle manufacturer after it announced that 5,000 of its 44,000 strong United Kingdom workforce would lose their jobs.

Mr Quinn said Unite will scrutinise the business case for JLR's job cuts, and the union expects any United Kingdom redundancies to be voluntary. It is also working to ramp up its electric auto production. Its new Slovakian factory has a capacity of 150,000.

Under the plan, employment costs and employment levels will be reduced, and the job losses will be in thousands, the agency reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
