Note To Lottery Winners: Don't Tell Roommates You Won $10 Million

Note To Lottery Winners: Don't Tell Roommates You Won $10 Million”

Police said Saosongyang's roommate bought a $30 ticket at a grocery store on December 20 and thought he had won $10,000. Turns out the ticket is worth $10 million. He then told his roommates about it.

The suspect, Adul Saosongyang, was invited to collect his prize on Monday, but police were waiting for him at the district lottery office.

Suspecting that it had been swapped out for a losing ticket by his roommate overnight, he went to the police to report his suspicions.

Saosongyang was not able to immediately walk away with the prize money. A California Lottery spokesman told NBC News on Wednesday that "the potential owner of the ticket has come forward, but we can not say he is the victor until after our investigation".

Adul Saosongyang 35 year old Vacaville resident arrested for stealing a Lottery ticket worth $10 Million dollars from his roommate.

Upon visiting the store, they learned the ticket had been reported stolen.

The next day, the real ticket was allegedly presented by the winner's roommate at a lottery office - where he was told the ticket was really worth $10 million, not $10,000.

The man who actually bought the ticket will be awarded his winnings after lottery investigators verify his identity, according to the statement.

The California Lottery automatically launches an administrative investigation for any winnings over $600.

The lottery investigator teamed up with a Vacaville detective to get to the bottom of things.

Police and lottery officials began comparing notes and determined that Saosongyang had bought a similar Scratcher ticket, altered it, and swapped it with the winning ticket. Instead of rejoicing in the windfall, however, he was arrested by Vacaville police, who had obtained a warrant for him on the charge of grand theft.

Lieutenant Chris Polen told the Daily News Saosongyang had been transferred from the Sacramento County Jail to a smaller one Wednesday morning.

"Although, I'm sure everything will work out in the end", he concluded in an email to The Washington Post, adding a smiley face.
