Ransom demand for Norwegian millionaire's missing wife

Ransom demand for Norwegian millionaire's missing wife”

Anne Elisabeth Falkevik Hagen (68) has reportedly been missing for 10 weeks, but the news has only become known to the public today due to fears for what might happen to her if the word of her disappearance got out.

Chief investigator Tommy Broeske said 68-year-old Anne-Elisabeth Falkevik Hagen has been missing since October 31.

"The family made a decision to follow the police advice", Svein Holden told reporters.

According to VG, a note written in poor Norwegian was left at Hagen's home warning that she would die if police were alerted.

The missing woman's husband, Tom Hagen, also 68, is Norway's 172nd richest man, according to the magazine Kapital, with an estimated fortune of 1.7bn kroner (£156m). He made his multi-millions in the real estate and energy industries.

Norwegian police confirmed that "a woman in her late 60s is believed to have been kidnapped from her home in Lorenskog", around 12 miles from Oslo and 31 miles from the Swedish border, but did not disclose her identity.

The newspaper reported that the note said Falkevik Hagen would be killed if police were involved.

Broadcaster NRK said the ransom had been demanded in an equivalent amount of the cryptocurrency Monero - a digital currency similar to Bitcoin. "If we do, they are prepared to start a process that could lead to her return", Holden said.

Hagen's wife disappeared suddenly from the family's Lørenskog home on October 31st, and hasn't been seen since.

"A ransom demand and serious threats have been issued", inspector Tommy Broske told reporters.

The investigator said "the threats (in the note) were of a very serious character" and the police have no evidence that she's alive "but we haven't received any indication that she isn't alive either".

He said officers had been working on the case for several weeks and have urged the family not to pay the ransom.

Kidnappings are rare in Norway, a Scandinavian nation of 5.3 million that prides itself on low crime rates. Norwegian police have also engaged worldwide counterparts in Interpol and Europol as part of the probe.
