US Senator calls anti-BDS act unconstitutional”

The legislation, introduced by Republican Senator Marco Rubio, consolidates four bills that did not make it through Congress previous year. Under Senate rules, the majority leader was required to change his vote to "no" in order to move to reconsider the failed motion at a later date.

The bill was blocked by Democrats who have refused to vote through any legislation that does not end the government shutdown.

Earlier this week, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said the anti-BDS measure's inclusion in the wider bill "sends a message to Americans that they will be penalised if they dare to disagree with their government".

Although the impacts of the shutdown will only increase the longer it continues, many Democrats, even those representing large contingents of federal workers, insist they are not feeling pressure thus far to capitulate or compromise with Trump.

Last week, seven Republicans supported a Democratic effort to pass a package of six appropriations bills to fund areas of government that have been shuttered since December 21.

The movement among Democrats to oppose any bills that didn't end the shutdown began over the weekend after Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen said in a tweet that Senate Democrats should block consideration of any other legislation until McConnell of Kentucky allowed a vote on the bills passed by the House to open the government. Marco Rubio, are a measure that would provide for a new round of sanctions targeting Syria and language that is getting the most attention because it would seek to thwart efforts to promote boycotts and disinvestment from Israel.

The Florida senator also rebutted Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) after the socialist claimed the bill "punishes Americans who exercise their constitutional right to engage in political activity".

Trump meets with Senate Republicans Wednesday on Capitol Hill just hours after he argued on national television that a border wall was needed to resolve a security and humanitarian "crisis". "This is the U.S. where boycotting is a right and part of our historical fight for freedom and equality". In his remarks, McConnell rattled off a list of prominent Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer who he said had previously backed border security legislation "with enthusiasm" in 2006. "Let's not get off on the wrong foot, with House Democrats using their new platform to produce political statements rather than serious solutions".

When she said "no", Schumer said, Trump got up and said, "Then we have nothing to discuss".

"This is the mentality of these people: They hate Israel", she says bluntly. "As I've stated clearly, the Senate will not waste floor time on show votes, messaging votes, or any other proposals which fail to check those boxes regarding the funding bills". Ben Cardin's office emailed Cardin's official comment: "We should not stand idle when foreign countries or global governmental organizations use BDS tactics to isolate one of our key allies and bypass direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians".
