Warriors ask National Basketball Association to investigate Cavs' signing, release of Patrick McCaw”

The Warriors feel that the Cavs helped McCaw become an unrestricted free agent by signing him away from them and then releasing him.

The Toronto Raptors are signing free-agent guard Patrick McCaw for the rest of the season, league sources told ESPN.

National Basketball Association officials will speak to Patrick McCaw's representatives Thursday, as the league begins an investigation centered on McCaw and the Cavaliers, according to Mark Medina of the San Jose Mercury News.

The 23-year-old was most recently waived by the Cavs earlier this week after signing a non-guaranteed 2-year, $6 million deal. As a restricted free agent, the Warriors could match any deal, and that made teams wary.

Cleveland's alibi is that it had roster in shambles, reduced to nine available players against the Miami Heat last Wednesday after the injuries to Rodney Hood and David Nwaba, as well as both of their two-way players starting out their season in the G League.

On Sunday, the Cavs waived McCaw after three games in Cleveland ahead of a deadline that would have guaranteed his contract.

There might have been a league issue had the Cavaliers tried to re-sign McCaw at a lower number than the $3 million that he would've been owed this season, but the Cavaliers moved on from him.

McCaw's path to Toronto is an interesting one.

The circumstances were freaky and raised questions about Cleveland's motivation to sign and release a player off the roster of their frequent NBA Finals rival.

McCaw appeared in three games for the Cavs and averaged 17.7 minutes, 1.7 points and 1.0 rebounds per game.
