FDA recalls candy over possible hepatitis A contamination

FDA recalls candy over possible hepatitis A contamination”

Bauer's Candies Chocolate or Caramel Modjeskas - marshmallow candies dipped in chocolate or caramel, the FDA said - are subject to the warning.

Bauer's says its individually-wrapped marshmallow sweets dipped in chocolate or caramel came in contact with a facility worker who tested positive for the disease.

The concern surfaced when it was reported a worker at the candy-manufacturing facility had tested positive for hepatitis A.

Bauer's, a Kentucky-based company, began a voluntary recall of the candies, known as Modjeskas, amid fears that they may be contaminated, the FDA said in a safety advisory.

People infected with HAV may not have symptoms until 15 to 50 days after exposure.

USA Today reports that the employee that tested positive for the virus worked at the company until November 23.

The FDA and CDC are not aware of any cases of hepatitis A related to consumption of the sweets at this time.

"An investigation by our local health department and the FDA found that the risk of contamination to the candy made during this time is extremely low", read the statement on the Bauer's sweets website.

According to the company, no candy products produced after November 25 were affected.

Symptoms include fever, fatigue, dark urine, vomiting, joint pain and jaundice, among other signs.

Officials recommend those who ate the sweets purchased after November 14 consult with their healthcare provider to determine whether post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is indicated, even though the risk of hepatitis A transmission from the candy is low. Young children, however, may not show symptoms. The virus typically spreads when a person eats or drinks something "contaminated by small, undetected amounts of stool from an infected person", the health agency explained.
