Fiat Chrysler Will Pay $800 Million to Settle Emissions Cheating Claims

Fiat Chrysler Will Pay $800 Million to Settle Emissions Cheating Claims”

Fiat Chrysler agreed on Thursday to pay hundreds of millions of dollars, including a $300 million fine to the US government, to settle allegations that the Italian-American automaker cheated on emissions tests.

The official announcement is expected to be made later this week by the US Department of Justice and the EPA.

This on a day when Fiat Chrysler also agreed to a settlement in the neighborhood of $800 million. For example, someone who owned an affected vehicle on January 12, 2017, and who completes the software update will receive $3,075, according to the Plaintiffs' Committee for Fiat Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep EcoDiesel Litigation. The VW scandal extended to some 11 million other vehicles the company sold worldwide and led to US criminal charges against eight people. German auto supplier Robert Bosch GmbH, which provided some diesel components for the vehicles, also agreed to pay $27.5 million to resolve claims from diesel owners.

The person said the Italian-American automaker will be required to pay around $311 million in fines to the federal government and California. The company also agreed to buy back some vehicles, fix others, pay to mitigate environmental harm and settle lawsuits for a cost of more than $30 billion.

"This settlement is a direct result of the enhanced screening and testing procedures CARB developed to uncover the Volkswagen diesel cheating scandal", said Mary Nichols, chairwoman of the air board, in a prepared statement. VW's tally is past $25 billion in the United States alone.

Fiat Chrysler will agree to corporate governance reforms meant to prevent future emissions violations under the agreement, the person said.

The other $400 million will be split between consumers and remedy methods.

In addition, owners will get an extended warranty on all parts and systems affected by the software update, the settlement states. FCA says the software update "will not affect average fuel economy, drivability, durability or refinement".

"The settlements do not change the company's position that it did not engage in any deliberate scheme to install defeat devices to cheat emissions tests", the automaker said.

The Justice Department filed a suit against Fiat Chrysler in 2017, alleging that it used illegal software to skirt emissions regulations, akin to what VW did that led to Dieselgate.
