Packers hire LaFleur as head coach

Packers hire LaFleur as head coach”

"Hopefully he gets along well with our quarterback, and hopefully we'll have a winning team", said Stu Adair, who has been a Packers fan for 83 years.

"It's always been a dream of mine to be an National Football League head coach, but to be the head coach of the Green Bay Packers, it is surreal, and I am extremely humbled".

"I absolutely intend on calling the plays", LaFleur said.

Former head coach Mike McCarthy's relationship with Rodgers became strained at the end of his tenure, and the two had their differences over play-calling.

In today's Titletown Report: potential free agency targets at the safety position, the 15 greatest pass rushers in franchise history, the impact Matt LaFleur will have on Aaron Rodgers, and more.

"He needs to know I care about the players I work with", LeFleur said of the star quarterback. "The ball is in your hand at every play". LaFleur thanked Central Michigan University for giving him his first opportunity.

"I can't wait to get to work with him", LaFleur said.

He will be introduced at a news conference Wednesday in Green Bay. "I wanted Nick Saban. It was a little bit of a whirlwind", Murphy said while discussing the hiring process.

"We don't go through this all the time like the Bears do. That's how we're going to build this thing". "Went through the nine (interviews) and quite honestly, no one really stood out". "He was the most prepared candidate".

"He had a unique combination of confidence and humility", Murphy said. That's why it's so important to me to hire quality people around me.

Matt LaFleur had a feeling he was in the running for the Green Bay head coaching job when he got a call from Aaron Rodgers.

"I think he has a good chance at being an outstanding coach".

"Matt is smart, organized and has a great vision for the path forward for our team", said Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst in a news release. "His values and personality fit the culture of our organization".

The Packers did not release terms on the contract. LaFleur was taken aback. With Vrabel's influence rubbing off on him, LaFleur will re-establish the Packers as a team with the mental and physical toughness now required to win the NFC North.

He has 10 years of National Football League experience, two of those as an offensive coordinator. Given LaFleur is only 39 and coming off a one-season stint coordinating a Titans offense that finished No. 27 in scoring, there are reasons to be skeptical about the level of success he will bring to Green Bay. He joined Mike and Kyle Shanahan with the Washington Redskins, then worked in Atlanta under Kyle Shanahan.

Rodgers has said in the past that he prefers his quarterback coaches to be guys who have actually played the position.

Incumbent defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, 52, had an up-and-down first season in Green Bay, but there was promise.

As McVay's right-hand man with the high-flying Rams offense, LaFleur left previous year to join Mike Vrabel's new coaching staff with the Titans to become a full-time play-caller.
