Poland charges Huawei manager and Pole with spying for China

Poland charges Huawei manager and Pole with spying for China”

Also going by the Polish first name Stanislaw, the Chinese man had previously worked at the Chinese consulate. USA officials are claiming Huawei is working with the Chinese government, allowing its equipment to be used by the government for spying on Western adversaries.

"ABW (Internal Security Agency) officials conducted actions, as a result of which, we handed over belongings of one of our employees", Orange Polska said in a statement.

'The Chinese national is a businessman working in a major electronics company. the Pole is a person known in circles associated with cyber business, ' Maciej Wasik, the deputy head of Poland's special services, told PAP.

The two have not pleaded guilty and are refusing to provide testimony in the case, the state broadcaster said. If convicted, they face up to 10 years in jail, he said.

Huawei issued a statement from its Chinese headquarters that said it was aware of the situation and looking into it.

In December, Canadian authorities arrested a top Huawei executive, Meng Wanzhou, at the behest of USA authorities as part of an investigation into alleged violations of US trade sanctions, raising tensions with China at a time when Washington and Beijing are engaged in a broader trade war. She was granted bail but remains in Vancouver under 24-hour surveillance.

The Huawei employee is a Chinese citizen responsible for sales to public sector clients in Poland, according to TVPInfo. Poland's TVPInfo broke the news earlier today (via Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal) amid increasing tensions between the USA and China. They will remain in custody for three months.

The U.S. also pressured European countries to cut ties with the Chinese telecom company amid links to the Chinese government and data security concerns.

Huawei, on the other hand, opted to stay more or less silent on the matter, just saying it complies with local laws, wherever it works.

The detentions come amid the Chinese tech company coming under western scrutiny for being linked to China's government and having equipment which could contain "backdoors" for use by government spies.
