Woman unable to hear men's voices due to rare condition, report says”

Imagine the opposite scenario to What Women Want.

The patient identified as Chen, from the city Xiamen, on the east coast of China, told the doctors that she woke up one day to find she was unable to hear her voices of men, including her boyfriend.

In a freakish situation, a Chinese woman has been diagnosed with a type of hearing loss in which she is unable to hear the voices of men and can only higher frequency tones of other females.

She went to the hospital and saw ear, nose, and throat specialist Dr Lin Xiaoqing.

To clarify, the woman can only hear voices belonging to other women. The patient was a man.

This meant she was unable to hear lower-frequency sounds, including the average male voice. It's not just male voices they struggle with but any particularly low sound, including voices over the phone, the hum of a auto, and thunder.

It is also extremely uncommon. It affects an estimated 3,000 people in the US and Canada - for every 12,000 people with hearing loss, only one individual has RSHL, the audiology clinic reported. This explains why hearing loss more often affects our ability to hear higher-pitched sounds than lower-pitched ones, she said. Indeed, autoimmune conditions in the inner ear can cause balance problems that may lead to vomiting - a symptom that Chen described to her doctor, Clark noted. In this condition, the plot of the audiogram runs from the upper-left-hand corner of the graph and travels downwards like a ski-slope. RSHL is the opposite, hence its name, reverse-slope hearing loss. This can be caused by general anesthetic, a perilymphatic fistula (an abnormal opening in the ear), and intracranial hypertension, caused by pressure in the central nervous system.

The patient, who has only been named as Chen, said she felt sick and could hear ringing in her ears the night before and thought going to sleep might help. A range of factors can cause hearing loss, including hereditary diseases, infections, certain drugs, aging, and exposure to loud noises.
