7 dead, 5 critical in Cuban bus crash”

A government-owned bus carrying tourists in eastern Cuba crashed Thursday, killing at least seven and injuring dozens of others, according to multiple reports.

The bus, which was carrying tourists and local travellers, crashed on a road between the cities of Baracoa and Guantanamo. Five people were also left in critical condition from the crash.

The names and nationalities of those killed and critically injured haven't been released.

Global Affairs also added, "consular officials are also in contact with local authorities and stand ready to provide consular assistance to any Canadian citizens as required".

According to reports from Cuba, the driver, who clearly was not killed in the crash, said he lost control of the bus while on a wet and winding highway.

"Cuban authorities have confirmed that no Canadians are among those who died in this bus crash".

The road is said to be one of the most unsafe in Cuba, where roads are poorly maintained and accidents are frequent, correspondents say. Past year in all of Cuba there were over 11,000 vehicle accidents on their poorly-conditioned highways.

"We are now providing assistance to two British nationals who were injured on the bus". Thursday's wreck was the fourth major bus accident in a month.
