Marks & Spencer to close 17 stores - with 1,000 jobs at risk”

M&S has already outlined plans to close 100 stores by 2022 as it hopes to move at least a third of its clothing and homes sales online.

The closures will impact 1,045 staff.

High Street stalwart Marks & Spencer has put more than 1,000 jobs at risk as it unveiled its latest round of store closures.

Sacha Berendji, property director at M&S, said: "We're continuing to transform M&S with pace and as part of this we are making good progress with our plans".

M&S has today announced that it is consulting with 57 colleagues on the proposed closure of its Barrow store.

As part of its plan, M&S has already closed 30 stores.

No stores will close until this process has been completed and, in a statement, the company said it had "the intention of retaining as many people as possible".

"We remain dedicated to our customers and, if the proposal goes ahead, we will continue to serve them from our other stores in the region including M&S Meadowhall".

To date 1,891 staff have been affected by the closure programme with 1,591 (over 80 per cent) being redeployed to other parts of the business.

"Employees across the sector will be very anxious about their job security and wondering which retailer will be next to shed jobs or close down".

M&S first said it would close stores in November 2016, before ramping up the programme in May 2018.

All of these stores offer a free next-day Click & Collect service for customers who purchase online at M&S.com, the business adds.

"Proposing to close our clothing and food store in Newark this year has been an incredibly hard decision".
