Trump says he told Sanders 'not to bother' with briefing”

"Being able to question the press secretary or other senior government officials publicly helps the news media tell Americans what their most powerful representatives are doing in their name", said Olivier Knox, president of the White House Correspondents Association.

The White House Correspondents Association called the decision a retreat from transparency and accountability that sets a bad precedent.

The reason became a little clearer after a tweet from President Trump.

"I told her not to bother, the word gets out anyway!"

"ABC News reported Tuesday that Sanders" 35-day drought on holding a formal briefing is a record for both the Trump administration and every press secretary since on-camera pressers began back in the Clinton administration.

President Trump watched on television, increasingly angry, as House Speaker Paul D. Ryan criticized his handling of the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. "Most will never cover us fairly & hence, the term, Fake News!"

Trump frequently attacks the press as "fake news" and has drawn criticism from the media for calling its members "the enemy of the people" for what he views as unfair or biased coverage.

"Millennials and people, you know, Gen Z and all these folks that will come after us are looking up and we're like: 'The world is gonna end in 12 years if we don't address climate change and your biggest issue is, how are we gonna pay for it?'" Ocasio-Cortez said Monday.

He added that in the past, when Sanders was appearing more regularly, the media wanted to hear more from Trump.

Regular press briefings came to a halt after CNN's Jim Acosta wrestled away a microphone from young, female White House staffer late a year ago.

She and other White House officials have spoken to reporters in more-informal gaggles on the White House driveway several times since then. The government ran out of funding on December 22, over a border security funding debate between the White House and congressional Democrats, and has left more than 800,000 federal workers and contractors without pay.
