More plants, less meat, new food guide says

More plants, less meat, new food guide says”

Petitpas Taylor said: "Healthy eating is more than the foods you eat".

"Healthy eating is more than the foods you eat - being mindful, cooking more often, enjoying your food, eating meals with others, using food labels to education yourself, limiting foods high in sodium, sugars or saturated fat and being aware of food marketing", she said.

"Within the general population alcohol literacy is extremely low - there is very little knowledge about Canada's low-risk drinking guidelines and even less about the fact that alcohol causes several chronic diseases, including seven types of cancer".

Water should be our "beverage of choice", the guide says, because it keeps us hydrated without adding calories to the diet.

Heavy lobbying from well-funded food industry groups with these same concerns created controversy during the last overhaul of the Canada food guide 12 years ago. The information on the brand new guide is not only from scientists and health experts, but also from comments made by Canadians.

"We really needed to keep that distance for any perceived or real conflict of interest", he said.

The new food safety regulations, which Canadian Food Inspection Agency says are consistent with worldwide standards, focus on prevention, along with speedy removal of unsafe food products from the marketplace.

Reacting to the report, the Canadian Pork Council said Canadians could feel good about eating meat, such as pork, due to the health benefits.

Hasan Hutchinson, director-general of nutritional policy and promotion at Health Canada, said an online, mobile-friendly suite of resources has been developed to meet the needs of different users including the public, policy makers and health professionals.

In fact, the brand new Canadian food guide has completely eliminated the "milk and alternatives" food group in an attempt to put less emphasis on dairy products in a diet.

Early drafts of the guide indicating it would promote eating more plant-based protein had sparked concern among dairy and beef farmers.

Aziz said the 2019 food guide was developed exclusively on the basis of what diet has the most positive health impacts.

"Probably the most unique change, if you'd like, is the more plant-based recommendations in the guide". "It's not an equal swap-in, swap-out to get the same amount of protein".

The encouragement to consume less dairy contradicts Canada's supply management system and doesn't leave a choice but to rethink the status quo, said Charlebois.

The food guide hasn't been modified since 2007 and since then lifestyle habits have changed tremendously with many Canadians opting for less meat and more plans in their diet. "The new food guide turns that outdated thinking on its head, giving nutrient-dense and fibre-rich plant foods the prominence they deserve".

"Not all protein foods have the same nutritional profiles".

"What is striking about the new Canada's Food Guide is the shift to a broader approach - talking not only about what Canadians should eat, but also how they should eat", said Nathalie Savoie of the Dietitians of Canada, who appeared with Petitpas Taylor at the official unveiling in Montreal Tuesday.

Neiderer said she is concerned dairy is listed as a protein.

"What I think is going to come out of the Food Guide is this real focus on recognizing the complexity of the food environment in which we're making decisions, and recognizing ways we can support people to be able to achieve and health the foods that they're eating".
