MSP urges north-east woman to go for smear test

MSP urges north-east woman to go for smear test”

Three million women across England have not had a smear test for at least three and a half years.

However, the health board is keen to encourage the remaining 25% to come forward. "We need to implement this new cancer prevention screen as soon as possible to save lives", says Anna Adcock, a Research Fellow in Te Tātai Hauora o Hine and co-lead of the study along with Professor Beverley Lawton, the Centre's Director, and Dr Fiona Cram, Director of Māori research company Katoa Ltd.

"One of the biggest factors associated with cervical cancer is smoking".

"When we last looked at the smoking rate in Tayside, it was high".

Councillor Sara Rowbotham, cabinet member for health and wellbeing at Rochdale Borough Council, said: "The number of women attending their screening is lower than ever which is a real concern".

Writing on Facebook, Heather explained: "I want to share my story, to help others be more aware of the symptoms of cervical cancer".

"As a result of the survey, we held pop-up clinics which allowed more flexibility, and these proved very popular".

Previously, the 221 women who had been affected by the Cervical Check controversy were the only people who were able to receive the drug and other people who were suffering from the disease were prevented from doing so.

"Women between 21 and 65 years of age should get periodic screening for cervical cancer and talk with their health care providers about ways to prevent and reduce the risk of cervical cancer".

It comes as the charity Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust aims to raise awareness during Cervical Cancer Prevention Week. Also, there is a dearth of healthcare infrastructure for screening for cervical cancer.

Gynae consultant Dr Wendy McMullen added: "Surface changes that need treating can nearly always be treated in the clinic, either at the first or second visit".

"The screening appointments are not the most dignified but they only take 10 minutes and they are a life-saver".

Researchers say three out of four study participants reported very likely to do a self-test for the cancer causing Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) with nine out of ten reporting very likely to attend a follow-up if they tested positive.

She said: "I, as a Prime Minister, can stand here and say this - I know what it's like to go through a cervical smear test".

"It is not comfortable".

Women including friends and family who are feeling anxious, worried about symptoms or cervical screening (smear tests) results or coming to terms with diagnosis can contact the helpline, Ask the Expert a question via the online anonymous service and also access the online forum to get peer support from the forum community online.
