Nurse charged in sexual assault of incapacitated woman who gave birth”

Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said on January 23, 2019, that investigators arrested Sutherland on one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse.

A police spokesperson said Wednesday that he wasn't sure how much help the victim was able to provide during the investigation and arrest process.

Sutherland, a licensed practical nurse, worked at the Hacienda HealthCare facility in Phoenix from 2011 until his arrest on Tuesday, CBS News' Carter Evans reported.

Since a woman in a vegetative state receiving care at the facility gave birth in late December, police say they have been working tirelessly to find the suspect.

Two doctors from the Hacienda HealthCare facility have left after an incapacitated patient gave birth.

Meanwhile, authorities say the baby is out of the hospital and doing well but did not release details. He was ordered held on $500,000 bail during a brief appearance in Maricopa County Superior Court. He said his client is a family man with four young children.

"I know at this point there's DNA". But he will have a right to his own DNA expert'.

Gregan did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

But investigators are not ruling out the possibility the victim was abused numerous times, reports the Mirror.

Police were first alerted when a staff member called 911 saying "one of our patients had a baby and we had no idea she was pregnant". Gomez, whose 27-year-old son was cared for by Sutherland at times, went to the facility Wednesday to get her son tested. She often saw the couple leave for church on Sundays and they would chat occasionally.

"I cried. I just cried and cried", she said. He also mentioned that he liked his job as a nurse.

Court records indicate his wife filed for divorce six weeks before the victim gave birth. The company said it was "troubled beyond words".

According to Fox 10, Sutherland passed an "extensive background check" when he was hired.

"Once again, we offer an apology and send our deepest sympathies to the client and her family, to the community and to our agency partners at every level", Hacienda said in a statement.

"The important thing is that she is a beloved daughter, albeit with significant intellectual disabilities", they said.

Hacienda Healthcare CEO Bill Timmons stood down this month amid the deepening scandal.

In response to the governor's tweets, Hacienda HealthCare stated they have agreed to the State of Arizona's "request to have a third-party management team in place to oversee patient care and daily operations".

"Bill Timmons served as the CEO of Hacienda Healthcare for almost 30 years".

The woman, 29, is unable to speak, has limited mobility in her limbs and face and is unable to breathe or feed herself without assistance. She also responds to sound and can make facial gestures.

The parents declined to comment on Sutherland's arrest in a separate statement issued through their attorney.

Thompson said he believes the baby has since been released from the hospital. While speaking to NBC News, Pastor Mosley said, "That was back in the early days, him and his sister had a rap act".
