Extreme Wind Chills Expected in Chicago, Midwest as 'Polar Vortex' Moves In

Extreme Wind Chills Expected in Chicago, Midwest as 'Polar Vortex' Moves In”

A windchill watch signifies the potential for a combination of cold air and wind to create "dangerously low wind chill values". Other airlines reported delays averaging an hour.

But this storm - however much snow it dumps on us - is a one-two punch, ushering in frigid temperatures again. Look for a high around 20 degrees at midnight.

The upper Midwest could be hit by -60 degrees Farenheit wind chills, and the upper Mississippi Valley could see chills as brutally cold as -55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Some forecasts Monday were calling for temperatures to drop to minus-29 in Chicago, two degrees below its lowest temperature on record, set on January 20, 1985. Thursday and Friday will be brutally cold with lows in the single digits and wind chills around -15 degrees.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center said Monday that a storm system is bringing heavy snow over the Great Lakes on Monday before ushering in bitter cold air into the region. When the sun sets, the precipitation is likely to fall as snow across the region.

In addition to the harsh cold, heavy snow already hammered the upper Midwest and Great Lakes area on Monday, resulting in "dangerous to impossible travel conditions", according to CNN.

Even snowplow drivers are having trouble keeping up with conditions Monday.

"We're very concerned about the arctic air and the temperatures", Davis said.

The states were deluged by up to nine inches (23 cm) of snow in some places, as a wide-reaching storm moved through.

In eastern North Dakota, officials have issued travel alerts because of blowing snow. Areas of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and OH are under a wind chill watch, while parts of Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky and West Virginia have been placed under winter weather advisories. The Dakotas are grappling with blizzard conditions, the National Weather Service said.

Chances for rain will start late this evening and transition over to snow overnight as temperatures quickly fall. Milwaukee Public Schools and Minneapolis Public Schools also will be closed.

Although snow is bstarting to taper off, an overnight dump left several inches of snow in areas of Chicago.

The U.S. Midwest and Northeast were braced for risky subzero temperatures this week, as the polar vortex was set to blast arctic conditions unusually far south, the National Weather Service said on Monday.
