Measles Outbreaks Grow as Vaccine Rates Decline

Measles Outbreaks Grow as Vaccine Rates Decline”

"Clark County is now reporting 30 cases of measles", Inslee said Friday. While the King County website says the man in his 50s is a "suspected case", the governor said in a news release it is a confirmed case of measles.

They added the outbreak could still be in its infancy as the incubation period of the virus averages 14 days. The state of New Jersey only recently declared an end to a flare-up of measles there in which 33 incidents were identified. It is so contagious that nine out of 10 people who are exposed to it and are not protected will definitely get it. Note that the virus remains in a room as long as two hours after an infected person has left and because the symptoms do not manifest until after a week or two, most people can't tell that they already have it.

Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that causes fevers, coughs, and running nose, followed by a characteristic red rash that starts on the face and then spreads across the body.

A doctor's assistant brings a tray with a vaccine against measles, rubella, mumps and chicken pox prior to the vaccination of an infant on February 26, 2015 in Berlin, Germany.

Health department officials have connected 27 of the Clark County measles cases to non-immunized people while four cases remain unverified.

Because the disease is so easily transmitted, Clark County health officials have warned the public to be on the alert if they have been to public places where the infected have visited.

Across the United States, 2 percent of children did not receive standard immunizations for non-medically exempt reasons in the 2017-2018 school year.

"Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease that can be fatal in small children", Inslee stated in his proclamation.

One case also has been confirmed in King County, which is home to Seattle and one was confirmed Friday evening in Multnomah County, which is home to Portland. These locations include a Costco, an IKEA, the Portland airport, and the basketball arena where the Portland Trail Blazers play.

The Oregon Healthy Authority says the agency is working to let people know of the potential exposure within the county.

"Some people say, 'Why would you get vaccinated for something that is no worse than a cold?'" says Leman.
