Israeli scientists claim cancer cure just a year away

A group of Israeli scientists said they will likely develop a cure for cancer within the next year, it was reported.

"We believe we will offer in a year's time a complete cure for cancer", Mr Aridor told The Jerusalem Post.

"We believe we will offer in a year's time a complete cure for cancer", Dan Aridor, of Accelerated Evolution Biotechnologies Ltd. (AEBi), told the Jerusalem Post.

An AEBi spokesman acknowledged in an email to CNBC that "complete cure for cancer meaning that we will have the complete solution ready for first tryout in humans".

The company equates the MuTaTo concept to the drug cocktail that helped change AIDS from being an automatic death sentence to a chronic, but manageable, disease.

It sounds too good to be true, especially considering that an estimated 18.1 million new cancer cases are diagnosed worldwide each year, according to reports by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, with every sixth death due to cancer. He explained that most anti-cancer drugs attack a specific target on or in the cancer cell, but they often trigger a mutation that makes the drug ineffective. The proposed treatment attacks cancer cells across several receptor targets at once and also destroys cancer stem cells, which cause cancer to recur.

"It is not really fair for them to announce something like this without really properly vetting it, without peer-reviewed publications or with a clinical trial", said Moffit Cancer Center researcher Vince Luca.

The drug has been tested in mice which has shown success and is nearing the clinical trial stage, according to Aridor. "The probability of having multiple mutations that would modify all targeted receptors simultaneously decreases dramatically within the number of targets used". "Instead of attacking the receivers one at a time, we attack the receivers three at a time; even cancer can not mutate three receptors at the same time".

Morad said MuTaTo is also strong enough to both destroy stem cells and penetrate where other drugs can not reach.

"If it does not completely annihilate the cancer, the remaining cells can start to get mutations again, and then the cancer comes back, but this time it is drug resistant", Morad said. That means cancer patients can give a biopsy to the lab.
