Ebola spreading into "high security risk area" of DRC

Ebola spreading into

The UN mission- MONUSCO - called for a "thorough investigation" into the massacre. According to the report, although outbreak risk remains high at the national and regional levels, the global risk level remains low.

In eastern DRC, the outbreak of deadly Ebola virus disease which began six months ago, has now officially become the second largest ever, the United Nations reported on Wednesday.

"[Tuesday] the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) recorded seven new Ebola cases, raising the outbreak total to 743, including 461 deaths".

UNICEF is scaling up its response to help victims and control the spread of the disease.

The United Nations is cooperating with the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to control the virus in Mangina, Beni, and Komanda, however, the disease continues to spread in other areas, mostly because of insecurity and population movement.

"The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that in recent weeks there has been an increase in reported cases of Ebola in the DRC's North Kivu Province, most notably from the Katwa health zone, where response teams have faced pockets of community mistrust", he said.

Emergency aid in the form of medicine, food, water tablets and malaria kits have been dispatched to the region, the statement said. Over a thousand people have been massacred in the area since 2014 by armed fighters and more than 230 a year ago, according to US-based rights watchdog, Human Rights Watch.

"While the conclusions of this mission are still being finalised, we are able to confirm that several hundred people including women and many children were killed in unbearable circumstances", she said.

Voting in affected areas was postponed while the Electoral Commission building was among facilities destroyed.

The UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet said hundreds of villagers from four communities in Yumbi had been killed during inter-ethnic clashes between the Banunu and Batende communities in several days - beginning on December 16. The joint mission also visited the site where collective and individual graves had been discovered.
