Apple has now disabled Google's beta and internal iOS apps”

The Screenwise Meter iOS app should not have operated under Apple's developer enterprise program - this was a mistake, and we apologize.

A New York Times story Thursday described the panic and frustration of many of Facebook's 35,000 employees Wednesday.

Facebook's questionable research tactics has led Apple to remind them who's boss.

Apple shut down Google's distribution of internal iOS apps on Thursday (31 January), following allegations that the search engine giant had violated Apple's app distribution policy in wrongly collecting user data for internal research. A person with knowledge of the situation spoke with The Verge and told them that beta versions of Google Maps, Hangouts, Gmail, and others could no longer be accessed.

A similar app also got Google in hot water with Apple. The latter is a VPN app that gives Facebook users $20 a month in exchange for root access to participants' phones. "Regarding Apple's revoking of Facebook's Enterprise Certificate, Canahuati believes that this was simply just a misunderstanding and that the company's relationship with Apple is "really important". Meanwhile, Apple told Buzzfeed in a statement: “We are working together with Google to help them reinstate their enterprise certificates very quickly.”. The program is intended for companies to distribute in-house apps among employees, and by using it to deliver apps to the public, Facebook broke Apple's rules.

"We're working with Apple to fix a temporary disruption to some of our corporate iOS apps, which we expect will be resolved soon", a Google spokesperson said.

On one level, Apple's actions against Facebook and Google are simply the enforcement of its developer policies. Apple's terms exclude contractors from its definition of "internal use application", unless that contractor is actually helping develop the internal app.

"We have had our Enterprise Certification, which enables our internal employee applications, restored", Facebook said in a statement sent to Ars and other media outlets.

This particular app is called "Screenwise Meter", and it invites users from the age of 18 and up to participate. It's unclear how this will impact that deal when renewal discussions begin.

Smaller developers have to play by Apple's strict rules, so it's encouraging to see the same ones applied to tech giants, he said. As a result of being discovered, Google has also pulled the app from the iOS App Store, disabling it entirely.
