European Union irks Britain by calling Gibraltar a 'colony'”

"A government spokeswoman, meanwhile, said Gibraltar is not a colony and it is completely inappropriate to describe in this way".

The Telegraph understands that the British put forward an alternative footnote, but.

The original version requested by Spain was to be more strongly worded, given that nation's territorial desires over Gibraltar, but that was rejected by France who also have territories so described by the United Nations, reports The Guardian.

GBC's Christina Cortes asked the Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, to confirm that Gibraltar is set to be listed as a visa-exempt territory, albeit in a separate category to the UK.

"The Taoiseach (prime minister) will use the opportunity once again to thank the institutions, and the other Member States, for their continuing support for Ireland", an Irish government statement said.

But the Spanish Government is pushing for the inclusion of a footnote in the draft legislation describing Gibraltar as a "colony" and referring to "controversy" over its status.

Parallel talks among European Union states on letting Britons visit without visas following a no-deal Brexit were delayed last week, diplomatic sources said, after Spain raised objections over Gibraltar, a British territory to which Madrid lays claim.

Gibraltar was ceded to Great Britain in the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht, but Spain has continued to press its claim for sovereignty - which is rejected by both the United Kingdom and the residents of Gibraltar itself.

In the 2016 referendum on Britain's European Union membership, Gibraltar voted against Brexit, with the highest Remain vote of 96 percent.

In a 2016 referendum, British voters chose to leave the European Union after the country's more than 40-year membership.

"We will always take the side of a member against a non-member".

Spanish sources said this week that Madrid would insist on excluding Gibraltar from all agreements between Britain and the European Union once Britain has left. The European Parliament said last month that they would be in support of letting United Kingdom citizens travel without visas throughout the EU even if there was no deal in place by the time that the United Kingdom leaves.

Varadkar said earlier this week he had already alerted the European Commission that he will seek emergency aid for companies if Britain leaves without a deal next month, alongside other potential EU aid and domestic sources of emergency funding.
