GM poised to lay off more than 4000 workers on Monday

GM poised to lay off more than 4000 workers on Monday”

At the time, GM said it wanted to cut about 8,000 salaried workers from its payroll.

General Motors will start a round of involuntary layoffs on Monday, cutting about 4,000 white-collar jobs, according to the automaker's hometown newspaper, the Detroit Free Press.

A statement from GM Canada to the Toronto Sun stated reductions in salaried workers were announced as part of their November 26 restructuring plans, and that these layoffs would begin in the first quarter of 2019. GM said the actions - which were roundly criticized by USA and Canadian politicians - would save $6 billion in costs.

The layoffs were first announced in November, along with plans to close four plants - two in MI, one in OH, and one in Ontario. As for the rest, "we are not confirming the specific timing for when those reductions will occur", the statement added.

The GM plant in Lordstown, Ohio, is one of the four USA sites affected, CNN reported.

Automotive industry outlets, including Automotive News, has referred to Monday's layoff plan as "Black Monday", which are expected to begin at 7:30 a.m. and continue throughout the day.

But the moves were roundly condemned by politicians, including US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau. One month earlier, GM offered buyout packages to 18,000 workers and said it would seek to cut its global workforce by 25 percent.

During his State of the Union address next week, President Trump is expected to tout boosts in American manufacturing as one of his successes in the White House, CNN reported.
