Facebook Messenger finally lets you delete texts for real

Facebook Messenger finally lets you delete texts for real”

The move comes after TechCrunch reported that founder Mark Zuckerberg had retracted Facebook messages from recipients - revealing that the feature existed, but was not available to all users.

Facebook is now giving users a 10-minute window to delete messages after they've been sent. Although why you'd ever want to delete a message for yourself but not for anyone else is beyond our reasoning here.

When a message is deleted, it'll show a marker in the chat telling other users that it's been removed.

For up to 10 minutes after a message is sent, users will soon have the option to delete that message from the conversation. From there you can choose to remove it from just your phone or from everyone in the chat.

Remember a year ago when Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg purged some of his messages from various Messenger conversations? We get into a heated argument and send a Facebook message we regret. You're not the only one! "Starting today, we are launching a feature where you can easily remove your message on Messenger".

Zuckerberg has acknowledged that Facebook needs to do more to restore trust, and ferret out misinformation and abuse, and on Monday repeated his pledge to spend more "on safety and security".

The three services will still work as standalone apps, but will be merged so that chats and messages can pass between them.

"After Sony Pictures' emails were hacked in 2014 we made a number of changes to protect our executives' communications", Facebook told TechCrunch in a statement at the time.

Mark Zuckerberg is no longer the only one with the power to recall Facebook messages. If you select the former, the text will be replaced with content that says it was replaced by you. Are you stoked to finally be able to delete a message in chat-from everyone's view?
