U.S. corporations want Venezuela's resources - Maduro”

The United States welcomed the European Union nations' recognition of Guaido and encouraged other countries to follow suit, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement. "Similarly, they urge the National Armed Forces not to impede the entry and transit of humanitarian assistance to Venezuelans", the document said.

Pope Francis on Tuesday expressed willingness for the Vatican to mediate Venezuela's mounting crisis if both sides seek it. Russia, which along with China has backed Maduro in the crisis, underscored its view that the crisis can be resolved only with negotiations between the government and opposition.

That same article quotes Kosachev as saying, that no foreign country including the United States has a right to "determine" who is Venezuelan president, labeling an act of recognition as an attempt to interfere with the nation's domestic affairs and impose the Venezuelan people's choice of a leader. Maduro won another presidential term in May 2018 in an election heavily criticized both inside and outside of Venezuela for its restrictions on opposition parties as well as low turnout (around 20 percent).

The U.S. officials said trucks carrying the aid, including high-protein foods, would arrive in Cucuta this week at the request of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who last month declared himself to be the South American nation's interim president.

Eleven of the group's 14 members issued a joint statement calling for a peaceful change of government in Venezuela, without military intervention. "That is why it is time to increase pressure", Guaido said through an interpreter, his enlarged image hovering over the gathering on a movie-theatre-sized screen.

"The United States of America stands ready to deliver humanitarian aid to the Venezuelan people in Venezuela as well", Pence told a crowd of Venezuelan exiles.

Millions of Venezuelans have fled the country and millions more can be expected to go.

"The oppression of the illegitimate, kleptocratic Maduro regime must end", he said.

Alan Duncan, Britain's minister for the Americas and Europe, said Maduro's "mismanagement and kleptocratic approach" are singularly responsible for crippling his country's economy.

Canada and its Latin American allies in the Lima Group, along with the United States, have been pushing for Maduro's departure.

"From today, we will spare no effort in helping all Venezuelans achieve freedom, prosperity and harmony", said Pedro Sanchez, the Spanish prime minister.

The 16 countries are - Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the UK. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Guaido is now Venezuela's "legitimate interim president".
