2018 was the fourth-hottest year on record

2018 was the fourth-hottest year on record”

On Wednesday it incorporated the final weeks of past year into its climate models and concluded that average global surface temperature in 2018 was 1 degree Celsius (1.8 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial baseline levels.

Given that we desperately want to avoid rising above that global average temperature to avoid climate catastrophe for millions - if not billions - of people, now is the time to take climate action seriously, and begin the rapid transition of the global economy over to a low-carbon one, that relies on green, renewable energy.

"Over the next five years there is a one in 10 chance of one of those years breaking the threshold", Professor Adam Scaife of the Met Office said. NASA said the Earth's global surface temperatures last year were the fourth warmest in nearly 140 years, with the warming trends strongest in the Arctic region. That means 2018 was the fourth hottest year recorded in over 100 years. "The global average temperature between now and 2023 is predicted to remain high, potentially making the decade from 2014 the warmest in more than 150 years of records".

As much of world continues to rely on fossil fuels, greenhouse gases will keep mounting, trapping heat in the atmosphere.

"2018 is yet again an extremely warm year on top of a long-term global warming trend", said GISS Director Gavin Schmidt.

The British office along with NOAA, NASA and the World Meteorological Organization analyze global temperatures in slightly different ways, but they all came to the same conclusion Wednesday: 2018 was the fourth-warmest year on record behind 2016, 2015 and 2017.

The WMO said heightened temperatures also contributed to a number of extreme weather events such as hurricanes, droughts and flash flooding.

"That is not saying the Paris Agreement is done for. but it's a worrying sign", he added.

NASA announced today that 2018 was officially the 4th warmest year since the 1880s, with the fastest increase in warming found in the Arctic.

A United Nations report a year ago said the world is likely to breach 1.5 degrees Celsius sometime between 2030 and 2052 on current trends, triggering ever more heat waves, powerful storms, droughts, mudslides, extinctions and rising sea levels.
