Apple gives education grant to USA teen for FaceTime bug find

Apple gives education grant to USA teen for FaceTime bug find”

Users can download the new software update, labeled iOS 12.1.4, by going to their device's Settings, then General and then Software Update. News of the bug first hit last Monday, (Jan. 28), and Apple disabled Group FaceTime later that night, to prevent users from being spied upon.

The bug allowed eavesdropping by someone calling their FaceTime contacts, receiving audio from them without their knowledge before they answered the call.

Apple has finally pushed out a software update that offers a permanent fix for that embarrassing FaceTime bug that was disclosed nearly two weeks ago and which resulted in an unwelcome barrage of negative publicity for a tech giant that's made privacy a centerpiece of its corporate brand. They could also sometimes see your video if you pressed the side button to silence the call.

The fix is included in the latest version of Apple's iOS 12 system, which became available to install Thursday.

Apple says it has fixed the Group FaceTime issue, discovered by 14 year old Grant Thompson of Catalina Foothills High School, in all iOS devices including the often forgotten iPod touch.

Apple stated that they would create a security update and release it the following week.

Following the release of these patches, the system status page on Apple's website has also been updated to reflect the situation.

Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Your device will now download and install the update and restart your device.

After you've installed the update, you can feel safe re-enabling FaceTime on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

When done, enter your code at the lock screen and the update will be installed.
