LG's G8 Will Have a 3D Camera Up Front

LG's G8 Will Have a 3D Camera Up Front”

The South Korean electronics giant teamed up with German semiconductor maker Infineon Technologies to introduce time-of-flight (ToF) technology on the LG G8 ThinQ, which will be unveiled in Barcelona during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 later this month, Yonhap news agency reported.

This technology isn't new, as some cameras from the likes Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi have all put ToF sensors on their backs. Unlike the rest, the 3D ToF camera on the G8 will be placed at the front and it is powered by Infineon's imaging solution.

What the hell is a ToF image sensor, you ask? The chip is a REAL3 image sensor chip provided by Infineon. On top of that, we also expect better AR features than what Apple has to offer with their TrueDepth camera. On the other side, a ToF camera measures the depth on the basis of the time taken for an infrared light to reach the subject and return to the camera sensor.

Here's LG's Response To Face ID

A leak a few days ago suggested that the LG G8 will have a dual-lens selfie camera setup and now we know that one of them will be a time-of-flight (ToF) camera that will deliver Face ID-like features. This means it will be more effective in low light and will reduce the workload on the processor, thereby lowering the power consumption as well. LG also claims that the technology is usable both indoors and outdoors because it doesn't get affected by light from external sources.

Touching on the LG G8 ThinQ itself, the device will be their first flagship for 2019 which will go head on with the Samsung Galaxy S10. Due to this speed this technology is often used for face recognition and other biometric authentication techniques.
