Magic trade Jonathan Simmons for Sixers’ Markelle Fultz

Magic trade Jonathan Simmons for Sixers’ Markelle Fultz”

Likewise, the future first-round pick the Sixers acquired has about as much of a chance at playing a meaningful role in this year's postseason as Fultz would have had.

The Sixers traded Fultz to the Orlando Magic shortly before Thursday's National Basketball Association trade deadline, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. In return, they're receiving Jonathon Simmons, a 2020 protected first-round pick from Oklahoma City, and a 2019 second-round selection, the most favorable from Cleveland, Houston or Orlando, a team source confirmed (see story). Any remorse at this point was worth throwing out, and both Fultz and the Sixers should benefit from moving in different directions.

When I wrote about my idea Fultz trade scenario, a swap for Antonio Blakeney initially suggested by Bill Simmons; I hypothesized that the team should not only attempt to add a player who fits their win-now mode but also has a team friendly contract moving forward, and Markelle's nearly $10 million a year deal would have hampered their potential moves in July. "This is an incredible opportunity for us to add a former #1 overall draft pick to our roster and to add depth to our backcourt". Furthermore, Elton Brand has made it clear that the Sixers are in win-now mode, trying to make a run this season.

There is no timetable for when Fultz will be able to play again.

Fultz is owed $9.75 million for the 19-20 season, which will be a problematic figure for the 76ers if they re-sign Jimmy Butler and Tobias Harris. Even if Fultz has a rebirth in Orlando, if Philly hits its ceiling as a Finals contender, it will be something everyone can stomach.

"Magic president Jeff Weltman and GM John Hammond consider the Fultz acquisition as a low-risk, high-reward proposition", Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported. Altogether, this is a worthy, intelligent gamble by Orlando that could inject some energy into their organization.
