Pope Francis Acknowledges Priests And Bishops Sexually Abused Nuns”

It's not a thing that from the moment in which you realize it, it's over.

He said that priests and bishops had abused nuns, but said the Church was aware of the "scandal" and was "working on it", adding that a number of clerics had been suspended.

The Vatican newspaper's women's magazine, L'Osservatore Romano, last week blamed the all-male clergy for the crisis.

In recent months, more and more nuns and women are coming forward to expose the abuse that is happening in the Catholic Church.

The celebration of the late pope is 29th May on the General Roman Calendar, the universal schedule of holy days and feast days for the Latin rite of the Catholic Church.

What did Pope Francis say? Pope Benedict said that he terminated the order after being elected in 2005 "because slavery had become part of it (the religious order), even sexual slavery on the part of priests and the founder". "But it's a path that we have already begun".

Vatican spokesman Alessandro Gisotti said it was a French order.

"We tried to reach out to the Pope because in some of the countries he visits, an amnesty for the release of non-violent prisoners sometimes happens".

Just days ago the Vatican's women's magazine, Women Church World, condemned the abuse, saying in some cases nuns were forced to abort priests' children - something Catholicism forbids.

In 2013, the Community of St. Jean admitted that Philippe had behaved "in ways that went against chastity" - he died in 2006.

Before he became pope, Benedict was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the head of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican department that investigates sexual abuse.

Studies and investigative reports dating back to the 1990s revealed that nuns have suffered sexual abuse at the hands of male clergy in Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America, with African clergy in particular targeting nuns in order to avoid HIV transmission from prostitutes.

"It is the first time that the Pope, but also the Church as an institution, has publicly admitted this abuse is taking place, and that's hugely important", Ms Scaraffia told Agence France-Presse yesterday.

"If the Church continues to close its eyes to the scandal... the condition of oppression of women in the church will never change", she wrote.

"There are cases, usually in new congregations and in some regions more than others", Francis said on Tuesday. The thing goes forward like this. It said Pope Francis "considered this pope's holiness of life, witnessed to by his works and words" and took into account "the great influence of his apostolic ministry for the Church throughout the whole world".
