Ahead of second Kim-Trump summit, North Korea sings praises of flag”

If the allies press ahead with their annual training programs, ongoing preparations for the summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un may be affected.

They are likely to cover a wide range of subjects but focus on concrete denuclearization steps the North will take and the USA response, as well as protocol and security at the summit scheduled for February 27-28 in Vietnam.

While emphasizing a good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea, and "a bold new diplomacy", Trump acknowledged "much work remains to be done".

Trump has said his outreach to Kim and their first meeting last June in Singapore opened a path to peace.

But negotiations between the two nations have shown little sign of moving forward against the backdrop of the Trump administration's skepticism about North Korea's intention to give up nuclear weapons.

Discussions on declaring an end to the 1950-53 Korean War could also have been on the table, with Biegun last week saying Trump was "ready to end this war". North Korea's state media have not commented on the plans.

Communist-ruled Vietnam, which has good relations with both the USA and NKorea, has been keen to host the 2nd Summit as a demonstration of its normalization of ties with the United States since the Vietnam War, which ended in Y 1975 and killed more than 58,000 Americans and an estimated 3-M Vietnamese.

The 2 leaders first met in Singapore past year after Kim agreed to discontinue the reclusive state's nuclear missile programs.

Biegun said Kim Jong Un committed during an October visit by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the dismantling and destruction of plutonium and uranium enrichment facilities and that "corresponding measures" demanded by North Korea would be the subject of his talks.

President Trump has been eager for a 2nd Summit despite a lack of significant moves by NKorea to give up its nuclear weapons program.

Following an ICBM test on November 29, 2017, when the Hwasong-15 was sacked, Kim Jong Un declared North Korea had "finally realized the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force".

On Thursday, Trump's special envoy for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, held a second day of talks with officials in Pyongyang, North Korea's capital, to hammer out summit logistics and an agenda. "He may surprise some but he won't surprise me, because I have gotten to know him and fully understand how capable he is", he wrote in his post.

"North Korea will become a different kind of Rocket - an Economic one!" he said.

Pyongyang has repeatedly urged a lifting of punishing USA -led sanctions, a formal end to the war, and security guarantees. The North on the other hand, has been demanding the U.S.to remove its economic sanctions on the regime.
