Google’s new extension tells you if your passwords have been compromised

Google’s new extension tells you if your passwords have been compromised”

Google announced two new features to let developers using Google Sign-In automatically share information about security problems, like account hacks, to make it more hard for incidents to spread across services.

Cross Account Protection has been created by working closely with other major technology companies and the standards community at the IETF and Open ID Foundation to make this easy for all developers to implement.

The best thing about this extension is that it will also work with any password manager, in case you are using one already.

Tech giant Google has rolled out a new Chrome extension called Password Checkup.

The new plugin for Chrome was designed in collaboration with cryptography experts from Stanford University, although the extension is now available only for users of Google's browser.

One of the most common problems is a password breach. Once installed, it will check every time you sign in to an account using a username and password.

"Your privacy and security is of the utmost importance", says Kurt Thomas, security and anti-abuse research scientist at Google.

Google's security team has scoured the Internet for lists of compromised passwords and added them to their own database.

Internet users in Ireland score highly in relation to password security but fail to maintain good online safety habits, a survey by YouGov commissioned by Google has found.

Your passwords are never seen by Google (the company only stores a hashed, partial code for unsafe passwords in your Chrome browser), and Google claims the extension "never reports any identifying information about your accounts, passwords, or device".

Furthermore, safeguards were put in place to prevent an attacker from using the extension to unearth credentials, such as prohibiting brute-force guessing.

Google has rolled out two new tools starting this week enhancing security for users' accounts. Here Google will "only share information with apps where you have logged in with Google".

On the other hand, Google's Cross Account Protection feature will protect your accounts details of third-party apps, which you have used Google credentials to log in. But instead of leaking all kinds of sensitive information, the breached host will only know the fact of security event happening and when did that occur.
