Guteress calls for collaborative global action on female genital mutilation

Guteress calls for collaborative global action on female genital mutilation”

"On this Day of Zero Tolerance, I call for increased, concerted and global action to end female genital mutilation and fully uphold the human rights of all women and girls", Secretary General Antonio Guterres said in a brief statement.

Female Genital Mutilation is known to be harmful to girls and women in many ways: it is painful, traumatic, and causes immediate and permanent health consequences. The Sustainable Development Goals call for the elimination of female genital mutilation by 2030.

Ghana's Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP) on Wednesday joined the rest of the world to condemn the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM), calling on the citizens to act towards ending it.

Genital mutilation also has psychological repercussions, with many victims feeling anxious, depressed, incomplete and traumatized.

Female genital mutilation is a form of gender-based violence, and in order to end it, the root causes of gender inequality have to be tackled, and the worldwide community need to work for women's social and economic empowerment, they said.

The day is celebrated globally as part of UN's effort to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation since Female Genital Mutilation is one of the ancient cultures which has been practiced in Africa and Asia for decades.

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has called for decisive action by stakeholders to reduce female genital mutilation in the country.

According to the UN-supported 2018 Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) for Iraq, a total of 7.4 per cent of girls get mutilated every year.

With strong political commitment, we are seeing positive change in several countries. For instance, babies born to women who have undergone FGM are prone to having a higher rate of neonatal death.

At the worldwide level, it is recognized as a violation of the human rights of girls and women, and an extreme form of discrimination against them. It violates women's rights to sexual and reproductive health, physical integrity, non-discrimination and freedom from cruel or degrading treatment, said three executive directors.
