NYPD Wants Google to Ditch DWI Checkpoints on Waze App

NYPD Wants Google to Ditch DWI Checkpoints on Waze App”

"If you are impaired, you are not going to pay attention to that information", said Witty who highlighted that publicizing these checkpoints aids in educating people about the consequences of drunk driving. The New York City Police Department, however, isn't a fan of the feature.

'Individuals who post the locations of DWI checkpoints may be engaging in criminal conduct since such actions could be intentional attempts to prevent and/or impair the administration of the DWI laws and other relevant criminal and traffic laws, ' Ann Prunty, the NYPD's acting deputy commissioner for legal matters, wrote in the letter, which was first spotted by Streetsblog NYC.

The department went on to say that publicly revealing the location of DWI checkpoints can be considered against the law.

Google purchased Waze in 2013 and has recently begun duplicating Waze features in its own Google Maps.

The company said it believes these features lead to safer driving.

The NYPD's concerns are shared by the National Sheriff's Association, which emphasizes on its website: "There is NO legitimate reason for Waze to have the police locator feature!"

The popular traffic app Waze gathers user-submitted feedback to alert drivers to possible inconveniences they might experience on the road - inconveniences like getting stuck at a RBT traffic point.

This means users can report speed traps, accidents, traffic, police activity and other alerts on their route, which will appear for other users in the app.

GOOGLE'S navigation app Waze is known for providing real-time, user-submitted reports that advise drivers about potential thorns in their roadsides.

In regard to drunk-driving checkpoints, the NYPD claims it "will pursue all legal remedies to prevent the continued posting of this irresponsible and unsafe information", though Prunty does not detail how.

As noted by The Verge, Apple banned some DUI avoidance apps back in 2011 following pressure from senators, and it now only allows applications that show location information "published by law enforcement agencies".

Waze added, "There is no separate functionality for reporting police speed traps and DUI/DWI checkpoints - the Waze police icon represents general police presence". In 2015, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck criticized the application and claimed that its existence could jeopardize the safety of police officers as it is "not always in the public's interest to know where police are operating".
