Tulsi Gabbard launches presidential campaign

Tulsi Gabbard launches presidential campaign”

Gabbard's appearance on MSNBC Wednesday morning came after she brought a Syrian Kurdish leader to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address Tuesday night.

The Congresswoman had earlier announced her intention to run for President in the 2020 elections in January this year.

Questioned about her stance on Assad by NBC News' Kasie Hunt, Gabbard, one of Hawaii's two House members, said Assad is not an enemy of the US because, she said, he does not pose an immediate threat to the country.

Making her informal announcement to CNN, Gabbard said she considers access to healthcare, criminal justice reform and climate change to be key concerns for her campaign.

She joins Sens. Cory Booker (N.J.), Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) and Kamala Harris (Calif.) and Obama administration Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro in the field of candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for president.

Gabbard is an Iraq War veteran who gained national prominence in 2016.

Gabbard, was born in American Samoa, growing up in Hawaii, where she was elected to the State Legislature in 2002 at the age of 21, and volunteered to be deployed for two tours of duty in the Middle East as a member of the Hawaii National Guard.

Gabbard serves on the House Armed Services Committee where she is a strong advocate for veterans, our service members, and making smart strategic decisions that best secure our nation.

Gabbard pointed to her congressional record in support of LGBTQ rights as a contrast to the household in which she grew up, where her father was outspoken against gay rights.

If Gabbard somehow wins the primary, it's unlikely she'll have a Russian apparatus pushing for her election to the Oval Office over Trump.

"I believe that she really has made that change and she'll fight for the progressive values for all people".

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, a 2020 presidential candidate, declined to label Syrian President Bashar al-Assad an enemy of the United States.

News published a predictably viral story Friday, claiming that "experts who track websites and social media linked to Russian Federation have seen stirrings of a possible campaign of support for Hawaii Democrat Tulsi Gabbard".

Gabbard has a history of taking controversial foreign-policy stances, and was widely criticized in 2017 after she visited Syrian President Bashar al-Assad - an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

To reduce Gabbard to some kind of Russian stooge, as NBC did, would mean buying into the idea that it's implausible for someone who has seen war close up to want to avoid it if other alternatives exist.
