Spotify will start banning ad blockers

Spotify will start banning ad blockers”

But Spotify has been disabling accounts for abnormal activity long before then.

Music streaming service Spotify is cracking down on those abusing its free ad-clad package by introducing a zero-tolerance policy against ad blockers.

Until now, listeners who broke the rules had their accounts suspended, and were sent a warning via email. If you really don't want to see ads, sign up for its premium service, which is $9.99 per month - and there is a student version that's cheaper. "Spotify has multiple detection measures in place monitoring consumption on the service to detect, investigate and deal with such activity".

While the music streaming service has a decent number of paying users, a large percentage of the userbase stick with free, ad-supported accounts.

Spotify has reinforced its fight against ad-blockers by explicitly banning them in its terms of service.

The new terms of service stress that "circumventing or blocking advertisements in the Spotify Service, or creating or distributing tools designed to block advertisements in the Spotify Service" is "not permitted for any reason whatsoever".

The service is updating its terms of service, effective March 1, to make it clear that the use of ad-blockers and similar services that prevent ads from playing is not allowed. If you're using any of these options, you should probably stop immediately, lest your account gets terminated. The company is reportedly in talks to acquire podcast network Gimlet Media, which includes podcasts such as Reply All and Homecoming, in an attempt to bolster the podcasting element of its service.
