Ministers indicate new chance to vote on May's Brexit deal

Ministers indicate new chance to vote on May's Brexit deal”

The prime minister is due to update parliament this week on the progress of her latest talks with the EU.

The "continuity agreement" - based on the EU's existing free trade deal with Switzerland - was agreed in December but ratified on Monday.

Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said: "I think that gives that sense of timetable, clarity and goal on what we are doing with the European Union - taking that work forward and our determination to get a deal - but equally knowing that role that Parliament very firmly has". It is likely that many amendments similar to those debated on January 29 will be proposed, including attempts to shift control of the process away from government and give parliament a chance to define Brexit.

There are few signs of concessions coming May's way from Brussels.

"Unless Parliament can agree on something else, that is what we are going to get".

The backstop aims to prevent a hard border on the island of Ireland has been a constant sticking point in Brexit negotiations with Tory Brexiteers and the DUP rejecting the plan.

The new trade deal will come into effect after the end of the Brexit transition period.

If London and Brussels manage to reach a deal for an orderly Brexit, the bilateral agreements between Switzerland and the European Union will continue to apply to Britain until the end of the transition period, the statement said.

Mrs May's Brexit deal - which she spent months negotiating and had agreed with the European Union - covers the terms of the UK's divorce and the framework of future relations. "The party system provides the foundation for parliamentary democracy; now it's broken, our unstable hung parliament in Westminster is wobbling more and more", according to Sky News journalist Adam Boulton.

MPs are set to vote again on Britain's Brexit options on February 14. Conservative party officials are preparing for an early election, slated for June 6, a date weighted with history, being the day in 1944 that the Allies stormed the Normandy beaches to start to roll back the Nazi occupation of Europe. But they are opposed by Brexiters in the Cabinet, who are muttering about resigning too. British banks would be required to adhere to any changes in the rules even though United Kingdom politicians would no longer have a say in how they evolved.

Corbyn's proposal has infuriated many of his own lawmakers, the majority of whom are Remainers.

After talks with Brussels this week Mrs May said that she was determined to deliver Brexit on time ahead of the March 29 deadline.

But Downing Street announced the statement has been brought forward to give parliament a couple of days to consider it before Thursday's Commons debate.
