CDC: 'Zombie deer disease' spreading in USA could infect humans”

This is not a new thing, but the internet is once again obsessing over it since there's a new report saying the disease could spread to humans.

The Center for Disease Control has issued a warning about a deadly disease spreading into states in the midwest.

The disease quickly spreads through the brain and spinal column of infected animals, causing drastic weight loss, drooling, listlessness, aggression, and lack of fear of people, according to the CDC.

Chronic wasting disease is one of a number of prion diseases; a family of rare and progressive neurodegenerative disorders affecting animals and humans.

He said the reports in south New Mexico are of a small herd of deer. The CDC studies found no evidence of "zombie deer disease" anywhere near New York City.

These characteristics are why CWD has earned the moniker of "zombie deer disease" and the myth-like suggestion that once contracted, deer turn into a ghoulish parody of their once healthy selves.

The animals contract the disease through contact with bodily fluids and feces.

Michael Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, recently warned that the nature of the disease is similar to mad cow disease, which can be transmitted from infected cows to people, CBS News reported. There is no known case of CWD in a person.

He compared CWD to "mad cow disease"-another prion disease which caused the deaths of more than 150 people throughout the 1980s and 90s in the United Kingdom, despite the fact that many initially doubted it could spread to humans".

The CDC is, however, continuing to warn the public to test their venison or elk meat for CWD before eating it from areas with documented infections.
