Warning over anti-ageing blood injections

Warning over anti-ageing blood injections”

Some studies have even shown that older mice infused with the blood of young mice became healthier.

The agency cautions that plasma, the liquid part of blood, from young individuals has "no proven clinical benefit" to treat or prevent the conditions of normal aging or associated diseases including dementia, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, heart disease, or multiple sclerosis-despite what some clinics claim. The only instances of these treatments should take place in the form of clinical trials that are under an institutional review board with regulatory oversight, according to the FDA.

A growing number of clinics across the United States offer infusions of plasma specifically from young donors-peddled as anti-aging treatments and cures for disease. "As a result, the reported uses of these products should not be assumed to be safe or effective".

Ambrosia's website was updated Tuesday to say it has "ceased patient treatments" in compliance with the FDA's advisory. Being infused with young blood could be risky as this type of infusion did not go through the required testing. "Such treatments have no proven clinical benefits for the uses for which the clinics are advertising them, and are potentially harmful".

Ambrosia says "experiments in mice called parabiosis provided the inspiration to deliver treatments with young plasma".

The quest to rejuvenate aging people with the blood of young donors has generated paying customers, captured the popular imagination, and, now, prompted a warning from the Food and Drug Administration. (In Greek mythology, ambrosia is the meals or drink of the gods and confers immortality.) Jesse Karmazin found it, a graduate of Princeton University and the Stanford Faculty of Drugs, and the corporate's web site refers to plasma as a "medical remedy". The Florida-based company, Ambrosia Health, listed the price of infusions from people ages 16 to 25 at $8,000 a liter or $12,000 for two, payable via PayPal. It has locations in Phoenix, Arizona; Los Angeles, California; Tampa, Florida; Omaha, Nebraska; and Houston, Texas, according to the company's website. The FDA-recognized Circular of Information for the Use of Human Blood and Blood Components, published by AABB, lists recognized indications for which the administration of plasma is safe and effective; these are included in the FDA's safety communication.

A controversial startup focused on offering blood-transfusions with young people's blood for United States dollars 8000 called Ambrosia chose to stop providing all procedures after receiving warnings from federal regulators. "I want to be clear, at this point, it works", Karmazin said in an interview with Mic. "It reverses aging", he told Mic.

Nevertheless, Karmazin told the United Kingdom newspaper The Times, "I'm not really in the camp of saying this will provide immortality, but I think it comes pretty close".
