SpaceX Crew Dragon, Built to Carry Humans, Launches Demo Flight

SpaceX Crew Dragon, Built to Carry Humans, Launches Demo Flight”

The capsule from the California company founded in 2002 by entrepreneur Elon Musk didn't include actual crew members - except for a life-size dummy named Ripley, who was named after the lead character in the "Alien" movies.

Shortly after liftoff, the rocket's main engine turned off and the first and second stages separated.

Speaking to reporters after the launch, Musk said he was "emotionally exhausted" after the flight, which he said was "super stressful". It marks the 35th such recovery by SpaceX.

Elon Musk, the CEO of US SpaceX aerospace company, said on Friday, after the launch of the SpaceX-manufactured Dragon 2 spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS), that, of all the other stages of the mission, he was most of all anxious about Dragon 2's docking with the ISS and its return to Earth.

The launch systems are aimed at ending U.S. reliance on Russian rockets for rides to the $100 billion orbital research laboratory, which flies about 250 miles (402 km) above Earth, at about $80 million per ticket. After NASA retired its shuttle fleet in 2011, the US has relied on Russian Federation to bring astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

The mission aims to test the vessel's reliability and safety in real-life conditions.

It will be fitted with monitors to test the forces that future astronauts will be subjected to on take-off and when they return to the Earth's atmosphere and then splash down in the Atlantic, slowed down by giant parachutes.

Looking even farther out, "maybe there's something beyond space station", he said.

"This is really a significant achievement in the history of American spaceflight", NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine said prior to launch.

After the shuttle program was shuttered in 2011 after a 30-year run, NASA began outsourcing the logistics of its space missions. Soyuz tickets have skyrocketed over the years; NASA now pays $82 million per seat.

While Saturday's SpaceX test mission is a crucial step in the oft-delayed project, there are questions about whether NASA can achieve its 2019 flight goal of manned flight.

NASA did not want to rely on just one single vehicle, in case of accidents. The SpaceX company employees cheered until the capsule reached orbit. SpaceX and Boeing originally planned to make their first flights with people within a few years of receiving the contracts but both programs faced technical challenges and funding issues from Congress.

In less than a decade, it has become a key partner for NASA, in addition to dominating the market for private satellite launches.

The capsule is now in orbit, while the Falcon 9 safely landed on one of the drone ships in the Atlantic.
